Edinburgh Fringe iPhone App

The Unofficial Edinburgh Fringe (EdFringe) iPhone app is an electronic version of the Edinburgh Fringe Programme. It’s free (as in beer) and free from adverts too.

The app contains pretty much all the details you can find in the official paper copy of the programme, without the bulk, inky fingers or endless page-turning:

  • Show details, including name and performing group.
  • Performance details, including date, time and venue.
  • Venue details, including name, address, description, food and accessibility details.

Features include the standard iPhone fare:

  • Browse shows alphabetically by category, by what’s on today, or by run-order at venues.
  • Browse groups alphabetically.
  • Browse venues alphabetically, by venue number or on a map.
  • Search for shows, groups and venues.
  • Bookmark shows, groups, venues and specific performances.
  • Call a venue’s boxoffice or view directions to a venue from your current location.
  • Programme data stored on your iPhone for offline viewing but updates are periodically downloaded in the background when you launch the app (we know how bad mobile signals are in and around many of the Fringe venues!)
  • See how many show, venues, groups and bookmarks have been updated since you last ran the app. Updated items are shown in orange throughout the app.

There are a few wishlist features that should hopefully make it into version 1.1 (these may have to wait for the 2010 Fringe!):

  • Crowd-sourced reviews: read and post reviews straight from the app.
  • Location-aware view of upcoming performances.
  • Timetable view of your bookmarked performances. Maybe even some automatic timetabling of bookmarked shows to fit around your bookmarked performances.

What does it look like?

How do I get it?
Once it’s on the iTunes AppStore, just search for “EdFringe” and install like any other app. iTunes link coming soon…

I’ve spotted something that’s incorrect…
Drop me a message via the contact form with the name of the show, group or venue that’s incorrect along with a description of what’s wrong, and I’ll correct the problem ASAP.

Important disclaimer bit:
Programme data is copyright ©2009 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Neither Edinburgh Festival Fringe nor myself (Chris Warren) guarantee that the programme data is complete, accurate or free from error. You should always double-check with an alternate source (ideally the venue) to avoid disappointment! By downloading or installing the application you confirm your understanding and acceptance of this.
